HDMI to VGA Converter
Digital-to-analog video converter for legacy VGA monitors and projectors.
What is it?
An HDMI-to-VGA converter takes the digital HDMI stream from a modern source (laptop, set-top box) and outputs analog RGB + sync to a legacy VGA monitor or projector. Internally it has an HDMI receiver, video DAC, and timing generator. Used wherever older display equipment must coexist with HDMI-only sources.
When do you need it?
- Connecting laptops to older corporate / school projectors that only have VGA input.
- Industrial control panel HDMI source feeding installed legacy monitors.
- Digital signage adapters for retrofit installations.
- POS systems with HDMI source but VGA legacy display.
How to pick the right one
- Max resolution
- Most converters support up to 1920×1080 @ 60 Hz (the VGA practical limit).
- Audio handling
- Some converters extract HDMI audio to a separate 3.5 mm jack; others discard it.
- HDCP support
- Determines if encrypted content (Netflix, Blu-ray) will pass. Most general-purpose converters support HDCP 1.4 only.
- Power source
- Some are bus-powered from HDMI; others need external 5 V via USB.

Common questions
Why is the picture blurry through HDMI-to-VGA?
Analog VGA loses sharpness compared to digital HDMI. Cable quality matters — short, shielded VGA cables look much better. Above 1080p, blur becomes very noticeable.
Can HDMI-to-VGA carry audio?
VGA itself carries only video. Adapters with audio support extract HDMI audio to a separate analog audio output.
